Eva Mae Robbins
Eva Mae Robbins was born on 15 January 1921 in York County, South Carolina, a daughter of Boykin Robbins and his wife. She went to the schools of York County. By the summer of 1936 she was living at Chester, in the next county south.
On 23 June 1936 the Chester County probate judge, J. H. Yarborough, licensed Roland Ferrell and Eva Mae Robbins, both of Chester, to marry. The licence gives her age as eighteen. Her gravestone, her obituary and the 1950 census all put her birth in 1921, which would have made her fifteen that June. The licence records what the couple swore to the judge, and the difference is not explained.
She and Roland had four children: George Roland Jr. in 1941, James Edward in 1943, Volenious in 1945 and Harvey about 1946. In April 1950 the family lived on Lockhart Road at Chester, near Ferrell's Store. Eva M., twenty-nine, kept the house while Roland painted buildings, and the children were nine, seven, five and four. She was a homemaker all her life and a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Chester.
Roland died in 2005. Eva Mae outlived him by six years. She died on Wednesday, 17 August 2011, at the Chester Regional Nursing Center, aged ninety. Her eldest son, George Jr., had died the year before. Her graveside service was held at Evergreen Cemetery on 20 August with the Rev. Michael Shaffer officiating, and the family received friends at the home of her daughter, Volenious "Cooter" King, and her husband Jerry, on Ferrell Avenue in Chester. She left two sons, James of Myrtle Beach and Harvey of Chester, her daughter, nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was buried beside Roland under a granite marker headed "Mother" and carved with flowers.
