Eva Nina Culbertson
Eva Nina Culbertson was born on 26 May 1903 in Kansas. She was a daughter of Francis Marion Culbertson, a farmer, and Minnie M. Mills, who had married at Foster, Bates County, Missouri, in 1888. The family moved back and forth across the Kansas and Missouri line and once as far as Nebraska. In 1910 they lived in Valley township, Linn County, Kansas, near Pleasanton, with her father's mother, Chloe E. Wright, then 75. By January 1920 they were renting a farm in Homer township, Bates County, Missouri, where Eva, 16, was the eldest daughter at home among eight children. Her first name appears as Eva Nannie on her daughter's birth certificate, and her brother Jim's obituary later named her as Eva Nannie Avey.
On 31 December 1929, at 26, she gave birth to a daughter at Bell Memorial Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. She named the baby Lilly Bell, or Lillie Belle, Culbertson. On the certificate the father is written as Henry Smith, and nothing more about him is given. The child was adopted eleven months later, on 4 December 1930, by Harry and Cora Sheets of Kansas City, and grew up as Dorothy Jean Sheets.
Eva married Benjamin Harry Avey, called Bennie, who was seventeen years older than she was, born 19 June 1886. They settled at Pleasanton in Linn County, Kansas, near the Missouri line. Their children were Eva A. (1934), Thelma E. (1941), Grace Anna, born in 1943, who died as a baby in 1944, Carl R., called Butch (1945), and Gladys Blanche (1948). Ben died on 3 June 1962.
Eva was a widow for thirty three years. She died at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, Kansas, on 22 October 1995, aged 92. Visitation was held at the Torneden-Coffel Funeral Home in Pleasanton on Tuesday 24 October, and she was buried beside Ben at Eureka Cemetery, Pleasanton, at a graveside service the next afternoon. Their shared stone reads "AVEY" over "EVA N., MAY 26 1903, OCT 22 1995" and "BEN H., JUNE 19 1886, JUNE 3 1962", with "TOGETHER FOREVER" between them. The daughter she gave up in 1930 died two years after her, in 1997.
