Francis Marion Culbertson
Francis Marion Culbertson, who went by Marion and signed as F. M., was born in Missouri about 1862. His father had been born in Pennsylvania and his mother, Chloe E., in Kentucky.
On 1 February 1888 F. M. Culbertson of Foster, Bates County, took out a licence at the courthouse in Butler to marry Minnie M. Mills, also of Foster. He was over twenty one. She was not yet eighteen, and the recorder noted the "Written Consent of Father of young Lady now on file in this Office." They were married at Foster the next day, 2 February 1888, by the Rev. J. A. Pateet of Foster.
The birthplaces of their children map the family's moves. Delila was born in Missouri about 1892. Benjamin and Carl came in Kansas in the mid 1890s, then Fred and Alta in Missouri about 1899 and 1901, Eva in Kansas in 1903, Nellie in Missouri about 1905, Jasper G., called Gordon in 1920, in Kansas about 1907, James in Nebraska about 1909, then Jason and Dollie in Kansas.
In 1910 the household was in Valley township, Linn County, Kansas, near Pleasanton. Marion was 48 and Minnie 39, with nine children at home and his widowed mother, Chloe E. Wright, 75. In January 1920 they were renting a farm in Homer township, Bates County, Missouri, a few miles across the state line, with eight children still at home. By 1930 Francis M. and Minnie were back in Valley township, Linn County, with several grown children in the house.
