Everett Jackson Josey
Everett Jackson Josey was born in Washington County, Georgia, on 25 January 1847. His son's death certificate gives Washington County as his birthplace. He was seventeen in 1864, the year the Confederacy enrolled boys of seventeen and men between forty-five and fifty in reserve regiments for home defense. He served as a private in Company C of the 5th Georgia Reserves.
On 8 July 1869 he married Lucinda Harrison, also of Washington County. They lived near Riddleville and had at least ten children over twenty-seven years: Henry Lewis in 1872, William Lee in 1875, Dennis in 1878, James Everett in 1881, Forest Hamilton in 1884, Allen McDuffie in 1885, Leah Pearl in 1887, Edwin Talmadge in 1890, Windom Harrison in 1897 and Lawson Dewey in 1899. Allen died in 1887, aged two.
In 1911, under Georgia's pension act of 1910, he applied to the state for a Confederate soldier's pension as E. J. Josey of Washington County, Company C, 5th Georgia. The application was marked "Amended" and filed in 1911.
Everett Jackson Josey died on 2 February 1914, aged 67. He was buried at New Bethel Cemetery in Washington County, where his son Henry and Henry's wife Belle were later laid. His stone reads "E. J. Josey, Jan. 25, 1847, Feb. 2, 1914," with a verse beneath. A photograph of him survives, kept by his granddaughter Evie Lou Josey Smith, who wrote on the back: "Everett Jackson Josey. My grandfather."
