Henry Lewis Josey
Henry Lewis Josey was born in Washington County, Georgia, on 20 September 1873 by his death certificate, or 1872 by his gravestone. His parents were Everett Jackson Josey and Lucinda Harrison, both natives of the county. He spent his life in Washington County, near the railroad town of Bartow, and the Macon Telegraph called him a "prominent planter of Washington county." About 1893 he married Belle Smith, daughter of Bennette B. Smith and Sallie King.
They had nine children: Stella in 1894, Evie Lou in 1898, Ruth Mae in 1901, Zepho in 1904, Jewell in 1907, Ollis in 1910, Bertie Louise in 1913, Okella in 1916 and Harris in 1919. In 1913 Henry and Belle took the larger part in organizing a new church, the Josey Baptist Church, which carries the family name.
Henry L. Josey died at home near Bartow at six in the evening on 30 November 1939, of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 66, and his death certificate calls him a farmer. Belle gave the details for it. His funeral was held at Old Bethel Baptist Church near Bartow, with Rev. T. M. Callaway of Wadley officiating, and he was buried in the churchyard. All nine of his children survived him, every one still in Washington County. He and Belle share a stone there that reads, "Their influence lives on and on."
