Fanny Reiss
Fanny Reiss was born in Galicia, the Polish province of the Austrian empire, about 1893. Her maiden name comes from the marriage certificate of her eldest daughter Helen, who in 1936 gave her mother's name as Fanny Reiss. The census called her birthplace Galicia in 1920, Austria in 1930 and 1950, and Germany in 1940.
She married Leo Pomerantz, a Russian-born immigrant who had come to America in 1906. They began married life in Manhattan. In January 1920 the census found them there, in the sixth assembly district: Leo, 29, Fanny, 27, Helen, 5, and Sylvia, not quite two. A third daughter, Jeanne, was born in May 1921.
By 1930 the family had moved to Brooklyn, and from at least 1935 they lived at 317 Riverdale Avenue in Brownsville, at the corner of Stone Avenue. On 21 November 1936 Helen, 22, married George Steinhart in Brooklyn. In 1940 Fannie was 45 and had taken out first citizenship papers. In 1950, at 56, she was still at 317 Riverdale Avenue, keeping house in apartment 9. Her daughter Jean, Jean's husband Irving Feld and their two small children, Sharon and Bruce, were living with her and Leo.
