Ferdinand Laird
Ferdinand Laird was born in New Jersey about 1879. His father was born in Pennsylvania. He was the son of a Camden man of the same name, Ferdinand Laird, who is named on his grave as Ferdinand Laird Sr. and who was a policeman before he retired, according to a family account.
He was about twenty when his first child was born. On 11 November 1898 Elizabeth Spring, nineteen, gave birth in Camden to a son, Charles B. Laird. The birth return names the father as Ferdinand Laird, aged twenty, and both parents as born in the United States. A family account gives the couple's wedding as 11 July 1898, at Camden, four months before the birth.
In 1910 Ferdinand, 30, lived in Camden's 8th Ward with his wife Lizzie, 31, and six children: Charles, 11, Clara E., 9, Helene, 7, Edna M., 5, Walter, 3, and Lester, 1. His father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in New Jersey, and his wife was born in Pennsylvania.
By 1920 the family had moved a few miles out of the city to Magnolia, a small borough in Camden County. Ferdinand and Elizabeth were both forty, and ten children were at home: Charles, 21 and still single, Clara, 19, Lena, 17, Edna, 15, Walter, 13, Lester, 12, Elwood, 9, Thelma, 5, Harry, 3, and Frederick, four months old. Charles married Veronica L. Coleman that year, and their son Charles Howard Laird was born at Magnolia in August 1921.
Ferdinand died in 1927, about forty-eight years old. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery at Camden, under a plain granite marker that reads FERDINAND LAIRD 1879 - 1927. Elizabeth outlived him by twenty-one years and is buried in the same cemetery.
