Frances Jane Spears
Frances Jane Spears was born in Johnson County, Kentucky, about 1848, the daughter of Wiley M. Spears and Elizabeth Butcher, who had married there in December 1846. In 1850 the census taker in Johnson County found her, aged 2, with her parents, Wiley M. Spears, 24, a Kentuckian, and Elizabeth, 23, a Virginian, and a younger sister Arta, aged 1.
On 15 September 1866, in Johnson County, she married Samuel L. Baker, a young man of about seventeen whose family had come over from Virginia. Their first son, Ira, was born about 1868, and John, who carried the line, about 1870. By 1880 they were farming on Upper Elkhorn Creek in Pike County, Kentucky, beside Samuel's parents. That June the census taker wrote down Frances J. Baker, 31, born in Kentucky, with Samuel and six sons: Ira, 12, John W., 10, Cornelius H., 6, Wily M., 5, Jesse, 2, and Thomas C., four months. Wily was named for her father and Cornelius for Samuel's.
More children followed, among them Marion, George and Creed, born in Virginia about 1882. In the 1880s the family moved over Pine Mountain to the Clintwood country of Dickenson County, Virginia. Frances died there of fever on 9 July 1891, aged 42 years and 9 months. Samuel gave the details to the commissioner of the revenue: housekeeper, married, born in Johnson County, Kentucky, the daughter of Wily Spencer and his wife, as the commissioner wrote the name.
Her children's death records, in Kentucky and Ohio, give her name as Jane Spears. Her son John married Frances Vanover in 1889, and her son Marion married Elizabeth Vanover, Frances Vanover's half sister, in 1890.
