Frances Latham
Baptised in the parish of Kempston in Bedfordshire on 15 February 1609/10, daughter of Lewis Latham of Elstow in the same county, serjeant falconer to Charles I. She married William Dungan, a London perfumer of St Martin in the Fields, and had four children by him, Barbara, William, Frances and Thomas. Dungan died in the autumn of 1636, leaving her everything but the children's legacies and the bringing up of the children so long as she stayed a widow.
She did not stay one. She married Jeremiah Clarke and came over to New England with her four Dungan children, and had five sons by Clarke. One of them, Walter Clarke, became governor of Rhode Island. After Clarke died she married the Reverend William Vaughan, and on 18 January 1656 she entered into an agreement with her son Walter, then still a minor, through his guardians John Cranston and James Barker, over the dwelling house she was living in, an orchard and certain lands that were his inheritance. Possession was to be held by his mother until September following.
She died in September 1677 in her sixty seventh year, which puts her birth about 1610. A manuscript account of the Barker family, quoted in the Rhode Island dictionary, sets out her marriages in a single passage and adds a fourth husband at the head of them: "She was daughter of Lewis Latham, she was sometime the wife of Lord Weston, then wife to William Dungan, by whom she had one son and three daughters."
