Frances Watts
Frances Watts, called Fannie, was born in May 1846. Family accounts name her parents as Daniel Watts and Mary Russell. A Daniel Watts was among the men who registered to vote in Butler County, Alabama, in 1867.
She married Stephen P. Dean, and their children came quickly: Josephine in 1868, who died that year, Elizabeth, called Lizzie, in 1870, Serena in 1871, and Mary on 26 March 1875. In August 1875 Stephen died at 34. Serena died the same year, and Fannie's last child, Martha, called Minnie, was born in 1876 without a father. She was a widow at about thirty, with three small daughters.
Her daughter Mary married James Henry Piggott and raised ten children in Butler County. A photograph of Fannie in old age, which the family dates to about 1910, shows a thin woman with her hair drawn back, in a dark dress with a white band across the bodice. She died in May 1918, aged 72, and was buried in McClure Cemetery in Butler County, where her son-in-law James Henry Piggott was buried six years later. Her stone reads "Francis Watts Dean / May 1846 / May 1918."
