Mary Stephen Piggott
Mary Stephen Dean was born on 26 March 1875, the daughter of Stephen P. Dean and Frances Watts, called Fannie. Her father died on 16 August 1875, when she was not yet five months old, and she was given his name as her middle name. A sister, Serena, died the same year, and her youngest sister, Martha, called Minnie, was born after their father's death.
In the early 1890s she married James Henry Piggott, the son of James Madison Piggott and Sarah D. Mims. Family accounts make her father's mother, Eliza Piggott Dean, a sister of James Madison Piggott, so her husband was her father's first cousin. Her children's death certificates name her as Mary Dean.
She and James had ten children, born between 1894 and 1915: Jimmie, David Crockett, Tom Morgan, Byron, Joseph, Emory, Flossie, Minnie Cato, Fannie Maude and Jesse Willard, called Bill. She named a daughter Fannie after her mother. Tom and Flossie both died in 1910, and Joe died in 1927.
Her husband died in August 1924, when Bill was nine. Mary lived a widow for twenty-eight years. A photograph kept by the family shows her standing outdoors in a long pale dress in front of a stand of trees. She died on 19 August 1952, aged 77, and was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at McKenzie in Butler County, where Bill was buried in 1973. Her stone reads "Mary Dean Piggott / Mar. 26, 1875 / Aug. 19, 1952."
