Francis Alexander Simpson
Francis Alexander Simpson was born in Tennessee in 1849. In the census of 1850 he was a baby in Greene County, in the mountains of East Tennessee, in the household of Harvey Simpson, 27, and Eliza J. Simpson, 23, with a boy named John, 3. A memorial to him names Harvey and Sarah Eliza Jane Johnson as his parents. Harvey Simpson enlisted in the Union army as a private in Company G of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry, died on 5 April 1865, a few days before the war ended, and lies in the Mound City National Cemetery in Illinois.
On 2 May 1870, at 21, Francis enlisted in the United States Army at Nashville.
On 6 August 1874 he married Julia Harriet King in Rhea County, Tennessee, on the Tennessee River north of Chattanooga. Their first son, Arther, was born in Arkansas about 1875. By 1877 they had come to Kansas, where Victor was born.
In June 1880 the census found Frank Simpson, as he was called, farming in Saline Township of northern Ellis County, Kansas, with his wife Julia, 30, and their sons Arther, 5, Victor, 3, and a baby boy of three months, born in Kansas, not yet named on the page. Perry Commodore Simpson, born on 10 December 1879, was that baby. More children followed: Robert Ingersol, called Bert, in 1881, Clarence Edwin in 1890 and Pearl in 1892.
Frank and Julia spent the rest of their lives in Saline Township. In 1910 they had Clarence and Pearl at home. In 1920 the census listed Francis A. Simpson, born in Tennessee about 1850, with Julia H. and their grown sons Victor, Clarence and Harry.
Francis Alexander Simpson died in 1925. He is buried at Norman Cemetery in Ellis County under a gray granite stone headed SIMPSON, which reads "Francis A. 1849 - 1925" and beside it "Julia H. King, His Wife".
