Perry Commodore Simpson
Perry Commodore Simpson was born on 10 December 1879. He was one of the sons of Francis Alexander Simpson and Julia Harriet King, a family that farmed in the Saline River country of northern Ellis County, Kansas.
By 1909 he had married Eva Ethny Reedy, who was born in Marshall County, Kansas, on 24 June 1891. A studio portrait of the young couple shows Perry in a dark suit and white tie standing beside Eva in a long white lace dress. They had seven children: Clarence Raymond, called Ray, born in 1909; William Arvie in 1911; Lillie Ellen in 1914; Charles Frank in 1915; Lester Allen in 1917; Julia Elvira in 1920; and Edward Leroy, called Buster, in 1922.
Perry farmed in Saline Township, where his mail came through Natoma. He served on Ellis County juries more than once. In January 1911 the county paid him $6.60 in juror fees and mileage. The October 1917 jury list put him as juror number 20, with Phil Thurston of the same township two places above him. In July 1918 the county allowed him another $5.20 for jury service. The two men's families would be joined twenty years later when Perry's son Frank married Phil's daughter Louella.
In January 1918 the Codell news column noted that "Merle Brumitt is taking care of the new boy at Perry Simpson's." The new boy was Lester, born late in 1917.
Eva died at Hays on 25 June 1922, the day after her thirty-first birthday, leaving Perry with seven children between a few months and thirteen years old. Their son William Arvie died in 1927, aged about sixteen.
A photograph dated 1947 shows Perry late in life, a broad-faced man with white hair in a suit and striped tie. He died on 26 April 1948, aged 68, and is buried at Norman Cemetery in Ellis County under one stone with Eva and their son William.
