Francis Boughan was born in Ireland, in 1819 by his gravestone and about 1815 by the census of 1870. His wife was Margaret Ryan, born in Ireland about 1829, the daughter of Andrew Ryan and Mary Cavanaugh.

The family's movements show in their children's birthplaces. Anna, born about 1851, and Patrick, about 1853, were born in Ireland. Bridget, about 1856, was born in Maryland. From about 1859 every child was born in Rhode Island: Margaret, Rosa about 1863, Francis Henry in November 1865, Mary J. about 1867 and Catherine Theresa about 1869.

In 1870 the census found them in the first ward of Providence: Francis, 55, Margaret, 45, and their nine children from Anna, 19, down to Catherine, one year old. Mary Ragan, 23, born in Rhode Island, was living with them; the census does not say how she was related.

By 1891 the family had moved to Newton, Massachusetts, where the younger children grew up and Francis Henry became a house painter. The family's dead were buried at Calvary Cemetery in neighbouring Waltham.

Francis died in 1895 and Margaret, written Margaret Ryan Bogan, at Newton Centre on 27 February 1898. Their stone at Calvary reads, line by line: "1819 FRANCIS BOUGHAN 1895 / 1829 MARGARET HIS WIFE 1898 / 1863 MARGARET B. 1902 / 1867 FRANCIS H. 1909 / 1873 MARY J. 1935 / 1873 CHRISTOPHER J. FARRELL 1927 / 1875 CATHERINE T. HIS WIFE 1935 / 1901 FRANCIS FARRELL 1965", with "1900 MARY A. FARRELL 1971" on the base. Four of their children are on it: Margaret B., Francis H., Mary J. and Catherine T., who married Christopher J. Farrell in 1895. Where in Ireland Francis came from, and when he married, is unknown.
