Francis Henry Boughan
Francis Henry Boughan, known as Frank, was born at Providence, Rhode Island, in November 1865, the son of Francis Boughan and Margaret Ryan. His parents had come from Ireland by way of Maryland. In 1870 the census found him at Providence, aged five, the sixth of nine children, with Anna and Patrick, born in Ireland, Bridget, born in Maryland, and Margaret, Rosa, Mary J. and Catherine, born in Rhode Island. The family moved to Newton, Massachusetts, where he became a house painter.
On 22 June 1891, at Newton, aged 25, he married Nellie Agnes Reardon, also 25, the daughter of Jeremiah Reardon and Mary McNamara. Their first child, Joseph Francis, was born on 31 March 1892. The others were Gertrude Mary, born December 1894, Margaret Eleanor, born 30 May 1897, Francis, born 19 December 1898, who died at Newton Centre on 14 September 1899, Katheryn Virginia, born 19 May 1901, Genevieve, Ellen, a second Francis, born 25 April 1907, and Arthur Robert, born 27 December 1909. In 1909 he was living and working as a painter at 414 Watertown Street, in the Nonantum end of Newton.
Frank died at Newton on 25 May 1909, aged 43, of plumbism, lead poisoning, the disease of men who worked all their lives with lead paint. His youngest son Arthur was born seven months later. His second son Francis died two years after him, aged four, of burns from a bonfire. Frank is on the family stone at Calvary Cemetery, Waltham, with his parents: "1867 FRANCIS H. 1909", the stone giving 1867 where other accounts give 1865. His widow Ellen stayed at 414 Watertown Street for thirty years more; in 1941 she was still there, and Arthur kept a gas station at the same address.
