Francis Edward Zellner

Francis Edward Zellner was born on 11 July 1812 in Lincoln County, Georgia. His memorial names his parents as Arnold Zellner and Margaret Holmes, called Peggy. His daughter Martha's death certificate of 1932 gives his birthplace as Tennessee.

He came to Texas while it was still a republic. On 17 April 1837, a year after San Jacinto, he enlisted in the Battalion of the Rangers of the Northwest Frontier and served for a year. The rangers of those years were mounted volunteers who patrolled the edge of settlement against raids. For his service the Republic granted him land in Milam County.

On 22 December 1839 he married Sirena Myers at the home of her father, Charles Myers, in Jefferson County, on the Gulf coast near the Louisiana line. In 1846 they moved to Milam County, onto the land his service had earned, and they lived there the rest of their lives. When the census taker came on 14 October 1850, Francis was 38, a farmer with land worth $3,000, born in Georgia. Sirena was 28. Their children were Margaret, 10, Mary J., 8, Marion, 6, Elizabeth, 4, and Martha, 1. Marion had been born in Louisiana and the others in Texas. They had twelve children: among them Margaret, who married a Hasty, Marion, Elizabeth Frances, who married David Large Hodges, Martha, born in 1849, Parthenia, Eliza and Alice Emeline, who both married Nabours, Laura Ann, who married a Letcher, Mary Jane, who married Richard Thomas Griffin, Henry Bascom, Francis Edward Alexander and Charles Arnold Zellner. Martha married Joseph Daris House.

Sirena died in November 1893. Francis died at Cameron a year later, on 18 December 1894, aged 82. They share one stone in the Salem-Wilson Cemetery near Cameron, with a verse carved for them both: "We loved them, yes we loved them, but angels loved them more, and they have sweetly called them to yonder shining shore."
