François Henri Vonflie
François Henri Vonflie was a day laborer at Gundolsheim, a village of the Haut-Rhin below the Vosges. The plaque over his grave at Castroville gives his birth as 9 April 1786. When his son Henry was born on 5 November 1816, he was twenty-eight by the birth record, which names the boy's mother as Marguerite Ballmer, his wife.
In the winter of 1848, at sixty-two, he left Gundolsheim with Marguerite, their son Henri and his family, and a daughter, Marie Anne, and her husband. The Gironde landed them at New Orleans on 7 February 1849, where the list gave him and his wife each as sixty-six. They went on to Henri Castro's colony at Castroville.
Marguerite died in April 1850. His son was killed by Indians in 1855, after his son's wife had died, and in 1860, by a compiled family record, the old man was living in Castroville with his three orphaned grandchildren. He died on 21 March 1867, in his eighty-first year, and was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville.
