Henri Vonflie
Henri Vonflie was born on 5 November 1816 at Gundolsheim, in the canton of Rouffach in the Haut-Rhin. His father, Henry Vonflie, a twenty-eight-year-old day laborer, presented him to the mayor, François Xavier Gross, at eight that morning. The record names his mother as Marguerite Ballmer, the declarant's wife. The witnesses were Thiébaut Kauffmann, a tailor, and the village's officer.
On 23 July 1845 he married Catherine Gross, the daughter of a Gundolsheim vine grower, Romain Gross. Their first child, Marie Barbe, was born in April 1846, and a second daughter, Catherine, was born in September 1847 and died the next April.
In November 1848 Henri took a passport at Gundolsheim and brought his wife, his little daughter and his own parents to Le Havre. They sailed on the Gironde and landed at New Orleans on 7 February 1849. A compiled family record gives the birth of his son Henry that same day at New Orleans. The family went on to Castro's colony at Castroville, on the Medina River, and in 1850 Henri was a carpenter there.
Two more daughters were born at Castroville: Maria Catherina in 1851, who died in November 1852, and Marianna in 1852. A last daughter, Anna Maria Catherina, was born on 6 November 1853 and lived about three weeks. Catherine died after the birth, on 30 December 1853, and was buried at St. Louis Church that day.
Henri was killed by Indians on 24 September 1855, at thirty-eight, and was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville. He left three children: Barbara, nine, Henry, six, and Marianna, three. A modern plaque over the family's graves names him first: "Father Henri, born Alsace France 5 November 1816, killed by Indians 24 September 1855."
