Frank Urban
Frank Urban was born in Bohemia about 1810; the census of 1880 gives him seventy that June, and the death register that took him at sixty-eight later the same year would put his birth nearer 1812. His American record is two documents, five months apart.
The first is the census. On June 10, 1880 the enumerator of St. Louis district 47 found him in the household of Albert Hercules and wrote him down as the head's father-in-law, born in Bohemia of Bohemian parents, occupation, at home. On the next line sits his wife Annie, sixty-eight, mother-in-law. Their daughter Josephine had married Albert by about 1864, so Frank either crossed with her or followed later; no passenger record or naturalization is known for him.
The second is the city's Permanent Record of Deaths. He died on November 21, 1880 at 1625 Fulton Street of phthisis pulmonalis, the consumption of the lungs. The clerk recorded him male, white, sixty-eight, married, and filled the nationality column with Austria, which a Bohemian subject then was. The return was made November 23 by A. K. Hartman, the physician; B. Brockman, the undertaker, buried him at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, the great German Catholic burying ground of the south side, where his son-in-law Albert would be laid thirty-eight years later. His wife Annie survived him.
