Josephine Urban
Josephine Urban was born in Bohemia in March 1844, daughter of Frank and Annie Urban. When she crossed, and whether with her parents, is not established; by about 1865, aged about twenty, she was in St. Louis and married to Albert Hercules, a store clerk born in the city to Westphalian parents.
She bore ten children, of whom eight are named in the records: Mary about 1864, John in 1868, Albert in 1871, Frank in 1872, Josephine in 1874 or 1875, Edward in 1877, Rosa in 1878, and Agnes, the youngest, in 1882. The census of 1880 shows her keeping house with seven children at home and her own parents, seventy and sixty-eight, living with the family. The census of 1900, which finds the household at 1625 South 8th Street under the mangled spelling Hercular, counts for her ten children borne and seven living; the other two died young, and their names are not known.
She was alive for that count in June 1900 and dead by April 1910, when the census records Albert a widower. No record of her death is known. Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, where her father was buried in 1880, her husband in 1918 and her son Frank in 1922, is the likeliest ground. Her name survives on her children's certificates, Bohemia beside it, and in the middle name of the granddaughter born in 1918, Alberta Hercules Hemker.
