Franziska Demel
Franziska Demel was born at Hilsbach, a small town in the Kraichgau in Baden, on 10 November 1806, and christened the next day as Franzisca Katharina. She was the youngest of the three children of Johannes Demel and Katharina Lehnle. Her father was a sieve maker and a Schutzbürger, a protected resident of the town. He died of consumption in May 1819, when she was twelve.
On 4 April 1830, at six in the evening, she bore a son at Hilsbach. He was baptised Johann Georg two days later, and the priest entered him as the illegitimate son of the unmarried Franziska Demel. The father came forward "von freien Stücken", of his own free will. He was Christoph Heinrich Dotterer of Eppingen, an unmarried journeyman linen weaver. He signed the entry as the child's father. Her brother Johann Georg Demel, a sieve maker like their father, stood godfather and signed as a witness.
Two years later, on 6 May 1832, she married Christoph in the evangelical church at Eppingen. The marriage licence, no. 3167, was dated 29 February 1832, and the proclamation passed without objection. The witnesses were Ferdinand Herr, a citizen of Eppingen, and Peter Wilhelm, a citizen and vine master.
Their daughter Katharine was born in 1841. The family went to America and settled in Auglaize Township, Paulding County, Ohio. Franziska died there in 1869, six years before Christoph, and lies in the cemetery that carries the Dotterer name. Her brother and sister stayed at Hilsbach all their lives.
