Johannes Demel was a sieve maker at Hilsbach, a small town in the Kraichgau in Baden, in the district of Sinsheim. He was a Schutzbürger, a protected resident. That gave him the right to live and work in the town, but not the full rights of a citizen. The family was Catholic.

He was born about 1762, by his age at death. His parents are not known. Before 1801 he married Katharina Lehnle, whose surname the clerks spelled at least nine ways. Three children were baptised to them at Hilsbach: Joannes Georgius on 11 September 1801, Elisabetha Augusta on 25 September 1803, and Franziska Katharina, born on 10 November 1806.

He died at Hilsbach at noon on 26 May 1819, of consumption, aged fifty-seven. The parish administrator entered the death in the Catholic register the next day. Translated, it reads: "In the year eighteen hundred and nineteen, on the twenty-sixth of May at twelve noon, Joannes Dämel, Schutzbürger and sieve maker, aged fifty-seven years, died at Hilsbach of consumption. He was buried by me, the undersigned, on the twenty-seventh of May at seven in the evening, with a doctor's permission, because decay had already set in, the heat was too great and the smell was strong."

So he was buried in the town churchyard about thirty-one hours after he died. The witnesses to the death were Valentin Ettner, a surgeon, aged thirty-eight, and the schoolmaster, aged forty, whose name is hard to make out. No wife or parents are named.

He left his wife and three children aged seventeen, fifteen and twelve. His son Johann Georg took up the same trade and the same standing, and appears in 1829 and 1830 as "Schutzbürger und Siebmacher" at Hilsbach. Georg married a Protestant, Christina, and stayed in the town until he died in 1878. Elisabetha Augusta also stayed and died there in 1865.

Eleven years after his death, in April 1830, his daughter Franziska bore a son at Hilsbach. The baptism calls her the daughter "des verlebten Schutzbürgers und Siebmachers Johann Demel", of the late Johann Demel, Schutzbürger and sieve maker. In May 1832 she married the child's father, Christoph Dotterer, at Eppingen. That act calls Johannes "gewesener", former, which fits a man thirteen years dead. Franziska went to Ohio and died there in 1869.
