Frederick Haass
Frederick Haass, called Fritz, was born on 1 January 1834 in Germany, a son of George Henry Haass and Anna Maria Schwarz of Dürkheim in the Bavarian Palatinate. He came to Texas with his parents in 1852, at eighteen, and the family settled in Medina County beside his uncles Valentine and Phillip. In 1856 he went into ranching with his father and brothers, until an Indian raid carried off all their stock.
In 1857 he married Barbara Christilles, a widow born in France in 1833 and the daughter of an Alsatian colonist, Pierre George Christilles. Her first husband, Blaise Meyer Jr., had died in 1855 and left her with a daughter, Katherina. Fritz and Barbara had five children: George Louis in 1858, Mary Anna in 1861, Frederick Carl in 1862, Sybilla in 1864 and Henry F. in 1866. Barbara died in December 1869, at 36, leaving him with five small children and her daughter by Meyer.
In 1879 he married again, to Barbara Mangold (1836 to 1920). A county history of 1907 lists him among his father's sons as "Fritz, a stock farmer." He died in Medina County on 29 August 1903, at 69, and was buried in the Zion Cemetery at Castroville.
