Friedrich Hillius
Friedrich Hillius was born in Prussia about 1809, by the age and birthplace given at his second marriage. He came to the Bessarabian colonies from Kishinev, the provincial capital, where a small German Lutheran community lived among the Moldavians and Russians. The parish clerk noted in 1856 that his daughter's father was "from Kischinew".
On 29 December 1831 he married Karolina at Neu Elft, in the Lutheran parish of Alt Elft. Her surname is written Vesper in the baptisms of their children and in her burial entry, and Nesper in the parish marriage book. Their children were born at Neu Elft: Johann on 11 January 1835, Friedrich on 10 April 1837, Karl, who died in February 1839 aged one year and ten months, Rosina on 27 October 1839, Gottlieb on 19 May 1842, Katharina on 16 February 1845 and Anna Christina on 6 January 1848. A daughter, Susanna Carolina, was born on 22 February 1851 and died that October.
Karolina died at Neu Elft on 9 April 1854. On 29 June 1854 Friedrich, a widower of 45, married Maria Mährle, eighteen, the daughter of Georg Mährle of Neu Elft. Two years later his daughter Rosina married Johann Riethmüller, and their daughter Katharina was born at Neu Elft at the end of 1860. By 1860 Friedrich and Maria were at the colony of Leipzig, where two of their small daughters, Anna Friederika and Regina, died that spring. He died before June 1876, when Maria, a widow of 37, married again.
