Rosina Hillius
Rosina Hillius was born at Neu Elft in southern Bessarabia on 27 October 1839 and baptized there on 5 November, the daughter of Friedrich Hillius and Karolina Vesper. Her father was a Prussian-born colonist who had come to Neu Elft from Kishinev. Her mother, a native of Tarutino, died on 9 April 1854, when Rosina was fourteen, and her father married Maria Mährle that June.
On 23 November 1856 she married Johann Riethmüller in the Lutheran parish of Fère-Champenoise. The parish book gives her as 18 and the daughter of Friedrich Hillius, and her husband as 19 and the son of Andreas Riethmüller. The couple lived at Neu Elft. Their daughter Karolina was born on 13 December 1857. Their son Jakob was born in November 1859 and died on 18 February 1860, three months old. Their daughter Katharina was born on 31 December 1860 and baptized on New Year's Day 1861. Katharina married Samuel Radke in 1878, went with him to Russell County, Kansas, and died at Hoisington in 1934.
Rosina died young. By 10 August 1862 Johann was a widower and married Maria Krause. A married woman named Rosina Riethmüller died at Neu Elft on 14 June 1862, and she is the only one of the name buried there in those years. Her burial entry gives her age as 28 years, 7 months and 17 days and her maiden name as Martin. That age counts back to 27 October 1833, the same day and month as Rosina Hillius's birth, so the entry is probably hers with the year and the maiden name miswritten.
