Georg Peter Boxberger
Georg Peter Boxberger, Peter to his neighbours, was born on 6 October 1827 at Kratzke, a Lutheran colony on the hill side of the Volga south west of Saratov, where the first thirty-four German families had settled in August 1767 and a Boxberger, Johann Adam, a blacksmith from the Palatinate, had been among them. In 1848 he married Magdalena Deines there, a Kratzke girl of nineteen whose family had come to the Volga from Lindenstruth in Hesse. They had twelve children, of whom two sons and two daughters died in the old country: Georg Jacob, who lived from 1849 to 1853, was the first. Johann Georg was born in 1852, Anna Elizabeth in 1855, Johann Jakob in 1857, Maria Magdalena in 1861, Peter in 1864, Mary Elisabeth in 1867, Johann Heinrich in 1869 and a second Georg Jacob in 1872.
In 1878, when the Volga colonies were losing their old exemption from Russian military service and whole villages were leaving, he came with other emigrants to America and settled the same year in Russell County, Kansas, in Lincoln Township south of Russell, near the Russian settlement that became Milberger. He was one of the pioneer farmers of the county and belonged to the Lutheran church at Milberger, of the Iowa Synod. Magdalena died in July 1904.
He died on Sunday 13 April 1913 at the home of his son Peter, after ten days' illness with asthma, aged 85. The Russell Record wrote that he "was one of the pioneer farmers of Russell County and a good neighbor and citizen," and that eight children survived him, all in Russell County: George Boxberger, Mrs. Anna Krug, wife of J. J. Krug, John Jacob Boxberger, Lena Nuss, wife of Peter Nuss, Peter Boxberger Jr., Mary Elizabeth Karst, wife of Adam Karst, and George Jacob Boxberger, with 65 grandchildren. The funeral was on the Tuesday at the house and the church at Milberger, Rev. E. A. Biscuff of Otis preaching and Rev. Wm. Harder of Russell assisting, and the very large attendance showed the esteem he was held in. He is buried in the Lutheran cemetery at Milberger under a granite monument that gives his dates in German and names Magdalena his wife.
