Johann Jakob Boxberger, John Jacob in Kansas, was born on 4 June 1857 at Kratzke, a Lutheran colony of thirty-odd households founded in 1767 on the hill side of the Volga, south west of Saratov, by Germans from the Palatinate, Prussia and Hanover. His father Georg Peter Boxberger, born there in 1827, had married Magdalena Deines at Kratzke in 1848; the Boxbergers had been in the village since Johann Adam Boxberger, a blacksmith, arrived in May 1767. Four of his brothers and sisters died in the old country. In 1878 the family came to America with other emigrants and settled the same year in Russell County, Kansas, his parents, his brothers George, Peter, Henry and George Jacob, and his sisters Anna, Lena and Mary. All of them stayed in the county.

He married Salome Rohe, called Sarah, born in 1862 at Leebach in Russia. Their children were Johann Peter and Jacob George, twins or near it, in 1884, Magdelene in 1886, Anna in 1888, Henry in 1891, Fred in 1895, Ben in 1898, Edward in 1900 and William in 1904. Fred died in 1918. The family farmed and later lived at Hoisington in Barton County.

He died on 13 January 1940, aged 82. The obituary listed his survivors: his wife; sons George of Hoisington, Peter of Russell, Henry of Hoisington, Ben of Milberger, Edward of Ellis and William of Hoisington; daughters Mrs. Lena Radke of Great Bend and Mrs. Anna Dietz of Galatia; four brothers at Russell; and his sisters Mrs. Lena Steinert of Galatia and Mrs. Mary Karst of Milberger. May, as the stone calls her, died that August. They share a stone in Hoisington Cemetery, erected by the families of their sons George and William: Father, John J., and Mother, May.
