George Dann

George Dann was born at Rye, in Sussex, in 1818. The censuses of 1851 and 1871 both give Rye as his birthplace, and a Find a Grave memorial gives the date as 30 October 1818. His father was also named George Dann, according to the index of his marriage.

On 17 May 1846 he married Elizabeth Vennall Pilcher at the church of St Lawrence, Hougham, just west of Dover in Kent. She was a widow with a small son, John Pilcher, born at Dover in 1845. Her father was William Henry Butt.

George was a printer. The 1851 census of Buckland, Dover describes him as a "Printer Compositor," a man who set type by hand for the press. His household that year held his wife Elizabeth, their daughter Anne, aged four, their son George, aged one, and his stepson John Pilcher. Three more sons followed: Albert about 1851, William Henry in 1854 and Alfred Thomas in 1858.

Elizabeth died on 3 May 1862, aged 42, leaving him with five children of their own and her son John. She was buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's, Buckland, under a stone that calls her "the Beloved Wife of George Dann."

In 1870 he married again, to Margaret Young. The 1871 census of Dover finds George, then about 52, with Margaret, who was born about 1840. Albert, William and Alfred were at home, William as a carpenter's apprentice, and there was a new baby, James E. Later that year William left for St. Louis.

George also went to America, though when he crossed is not known. He died on 8 November 1895 at 3618 Dodier Street, St. Louis, and was buried in an unmarked plot at Bellefontaine Cemetery.
