George Gardiner Dodge

George Gardiner Dodge, who went by Gardner, was born at Horton, Kings County, Nova Scotia, on 27 September 1822. His father was Jacob Britain Dodge. His mother was Jacob's second wife, Olive Lavinia Schofield, born at Horton in 1800.

Some accounts make his mother Jacob's first wife, Susannah Ward, because the Horton township book is said to name her on his birth. Susannah's gravestone in Oak Grove Cemetery reads "In Memory of SUSANNAH the wife of JACOB DODGE who died March 14th 1819 in the 24th Year of her Age". She had been dead three and a half years when Gardner was born. Nova Scotia township clerks often wrote all of a man's children in one run under the heading of his first marriage, which would explain the entry. Susannah was Olive's aunt, so both women came of the Ward family of Beech Hill.

He married Lucinda Cox, called Lucy, born in Nova Scotia on 15 January 1826. Their first child, Georgiana, was born at Calais, Maine, in 1847, by Lucinda's memorial. The family then went west with the Dodges to Iowa County, Wisconsin. There were ten children: Georgiana, 1847; Susan Permelia, 1849; Jacob M. and Phebe Mae, both given as 1852; Charles Edward, 1854; Olive, born in August 1856; Amanda Mary, 1858; Henry G., 1862; Leonard George, 1863; and Frederick Benjamin, 1868.

He held land at Arena for at least fifteen years. In 1882 the Boston executors of the will of James Davis Cary conveyed him land in Iowa County for four hundred dollars, and in March 1897 he sold to W. H. Jones of Arena for three hundred. Both deeds call him Gardner Dodge. The second calls him a widower: Lucinda had died on 25 February 1889. Gardner died at Arena on 31 December 1908, at eighty-six.

In 1879 his daughter Olive married Elisha Jacob Dodge, a grandson of his father's brother John Archibald Dodge.
