Jacob Britain Dodge
Jacob Britain Dodge was born in Nova Scotia in 1793, into the Planter-descended Dodge families of Kings County, and died at Arena in Iowa County, Wisconsin, in 1860. He was a brother of John Archibald Dodge.
He married Susannah Ward at Horton on 1 September 1813. She bore him two daughters, Sarah Alice in 1814 and Frances Susan in 1816, and died on 14 March 1819, at twenty-three. His second wife was Olive Lavinia Schofield, born at Horton on 30 March 1800, a daughter of Susannah's elder sister Hannah. They married between the spring of 1819 and late 1820. Their first child, Eunice, was born on 20 December 1820, and George Gardiner, called Gardner, on 27 September 1822. Hiram, Paulina, Rachel Maria, Jacob Nelson and George Manley came after.
By 1850 he was in Wisconsin, enumerated at Ridgeway with his wife Olivia Lavinia. Ridgeway and Arena are neighbouring towns in the same county.
The Wisconsin end of his life is a family moving as a block. The Dodges did not send one man ahead. Brothers and their grown children came together out of the Minas Basin to the same stretch of the Wisconsin river, and three of the brothers are buried in the same county. In 1879 Gardner's daughter Olive married Elisha Jacob Dodge, a grandson of John Archibald, so both brothers stand above one marriage.
