George Isaiah Briant Barker
George Isaiah Briant Barker was born on 19 July 1862 at Springfield, Illinois, the only son among Elias Barker and Dorothea Bound's eight known children, and he was ten when his father died. He went by his middle name from boyhood and effectively never used the first one. The 1870 census of Cooper Township has him at eight as Branton. In 1900 he is I. B. Barker; in 1910 he is Brant I.; his own death certificate in 1930 was filed as Briant Barker; and his son Orville's death certificate names the father Isiah. A George barely exists on paper.
He married Hattie Sullivan in 1884, when he was twenty-two, and moved a county east into Montgomery County, farming at North Litchfield by 1900 and at Nokomis by 1910. The censuses give the couple at least twelve children, of whom Orville E. carried this line. He died at Irving, Montgomery County on 18 July 1930, the day before his sixty-eighth birthday, and was buried beside Hattie at Nokomis Cemetery.
That move of one county is the pivot of the whole American half of this family. The Barkers had been Sangamon County people for three generations, since the vanished Richard; from Briant onwards they were Montgomery County people, and Nokomis is where his son, his grandson and his great-grandson are all buried.
