George Lanham Zinn
George Lanham Zinn was born at Reedsville, in Preston County, West Virginia, on 30 October 1885. His death certificate names his parents as George Washington Zinn and Jane Turner. He was one of a large family. His father had gone to the Civil War at 19 as a substitute in the 107th Pennsylvania Infantry and had been wounded at Dabney's Mill, near Petersburg, Virginia, in February 1865; he drew a federal pension as a veteran while George was growing up at Reedsville. His memorial lists his brothers and sisters as Caleb Dorsey, James Samuel, Emery Jackson, Daniel Fay, Mason Warren, Orville McKinley, Lillie Ethel and Margaret May "Maggie" Zinn.
He worked as a carpenter all his life and lived in the town of Reedsville. He married Mary Ida Smith, a Reedsville girl born in 1890. Their children were Edna May (1910), George Mitchel (1912), Virginia Lucille (1915) and Harold Burnard (1916).
Mary Ida died at home in Reedsville on 31 July 1966 after a stroke. George, signing as G. L. Zinn, gave the particulars for her certificate. He was already ill. In April 1967 a doctor from Masontown began treating him for cancer of the left lung, which had spread. He died at St. Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Morgantown at 9 in the evening on 3 July 1967, a widower aged 81. His son Harold B. Zinn of Reedsville was the informant. He was buried at Gordon Cemetery, near Reedsville, on 6 July 1967, beside his wife.
