George M. Hinkle

b. 1830 · Ohio
Born 1830, Ohio
Children include Elen

George M. Hinkle was born in Ohio about 1830. The censuses give his age as 28 in 1860, 33 in 1865, 39 in 1870 and 51 in 1880. His wife Sarah was also from Ohio.

The births of their children trace the family's road west. William M., George E., John W. and Elen Eli were all born in Iowa, Eli in Washington County in October 1856. The next son, Jacob, was born in Arkansas about 1860. By the summer of 1860 the family was in Stanton Township of Lykins County, Kansas Territory. Kansas was opened to settlers in 1854, and the border counties went through years of fighting between pro-slavery and free-state settlers before Kansas entered the Union as a free state in January 1861. Lykins County was renamed Miami County that same year.

In 1865 the family was in Franklin County. In 1870 George was living near Peoria, in Franklin County, with Sarah and eight children. In 1880 the census found them there again, spelled Henkle: George M., 51, Sarah, 50, and five children at home, James H., Sarah J., Silas C., Nicholas B. and Thomas E., the youngest two years old.

His sons scattered across Kansas and beyond. Eli married at Metz or Independence in 1879 and moved to Silver Creek, Nebraska, in 1917. When Eli died in 1941, his surviving brothers were S. C. Hinkle of Ottawa, Kansas, T. E. Hinkle of Deer Trail, Colorado, and N. B. Hinkle of Howard, Kansas. Nicholas Benjamin Hinkle, born in Franklin County in 1867, married Annie Evans in Franklin Township in 1897 and died at Howard in 1948.

When and where George died has not been found.
