Elen Eli Hinkle
Elen Eli Hinkle was born on 10 October 1856 in Washington County, Iowa. His stone spells the name Henkle, and he went by Eli.
His obituary says that "when only a child he moved with his parents to the state of Kansas where he grew to manhood." In 1860, aged three, he was in Stanton Township of Lykins County, Kansas Territory, in the household of George and Sarah Hinkle. Kansas was still a territory then; it became a state in January 1861, and Lykins County was renamed Miami County the same year. Settlers had been pouring into that strip of eastern Kansas since 1854, and the border counties had just been through years of fighting between pro-slavery and free-state men.
The family was in Franklin County by 1865. In 1870, at thirteen, Eli was living near Peoria in Franklin County with George, Sarah and his brothers and sisters.
On 15 December 1879 he married Mary Louise Johnson. His obituary places the wedding at Metz, Kansas; hers says Independence. In 1880 they were living in Washington Township, Chautauqua County, on the Oklahoma line. They had eleven children. Three died in infancy.
In November 1910 Eli, Mary and three of their children were "converted and united with the Methodist Church at Aliceville, Kansas." Aliceville is in Coffey County, where the family appears in the state censuses of 1905 and 1915. In 1916 or 1917 they left Kansas for Silver Creek, Nebraska. His obituary gives 1917, hers 1916.
Mary was an invalid for her last years and died at Silver Creek on 6 August 1934. Their son George died in 1940. By then Eli was living with his youngest son, Laun, and Laun's wife Helen in Silver Creek village. On 24 March 1939 he moved his membership to the Methodist church there. His obituary says "he loved the church and his faith in God never wavered."
Eli died at his home in Silver Creek at eight o'clock on 30 September 1941, aged 84 years, 11 months and 20 days. Rev. H. F. Beebe held the funeral at the Methodist church on 2 October, and he was buried in Silver Creek Cemetery under a stone marked "Father". Seven children survived him: Thomas Albert and Ira of Clarks, Mrs. Cora Brockman of Columbus, Mrs. Ruth Metzer of Green River, Wyoming, Mrs. Rena Whaley of Wichita, and William Andrew and Laun of Silver Creek. So did three brothers: S. C. Hinkle of Ottawa, Kansas, T. E. Hinkle of Deer Trail, Colorado, and N. B. Hinkle of Howard, Kansas.
