George Stanley was born in Wise County, Virginia, the son of Joseph and Ruth Stanley. The county birth register gives the day as 28 March 1857; his stone gives 2 March. On 22 June 1876, at eighteen, he married Liza Moore in Wise County. She was seventeen, born in Pike County, Kentucky, the daughter of Nies and Susannah Moore, and she went by Eliza Jane. The clerk entered his parents as Joseph and Ruthie Stanley. They made their home near Clintwood and Isom, in the part of Wise that became Dickenson County in 1880.
Their son James Anderson was born in March 1877 and married at eighteen, in January 1897. The marriage register names his parents as G. W. and Eliza Stanley. Other sons were Robert Henderson and George McKinley, and there was a daughter known as Sis.
In 1910, 1920 and 1930 the census found George and Eliza at Clintwood, in 1910 with their son George McKinley still at home. George Stanley died in Dickenson County on 27 November 1931, aged seventy-four. He was buried in the Ramey Flats Cemetery near Clintwood. His stone reads "George Stanley, born Mar. 2, 1857, died Nov. 27, 1931." Eliza was buried beside him in 1936.
