George W. Crawford
George W. Crawford was born in North Carolina about 1820. He married Sarah Falls in Union County, Georgia on 13 December 1840, and the clerk wrote his name as George Craford. She was about seventeen and he about twenty.
He farmed in the 1027th District of the Georgia Militia in Fannin County, which was carved out of Union and Gilmer in 1854. The census of 1860 holds him there at forty, with Sarah thirty seven and six children: William seventeen, George twelve, Margarett nine, Samuel seven, Sarah three and Ellendor a few months old. Every one of the children was born in Georgia.
He is on no page after that one. Josephine was born in 1863, and Sarah married Berry Carter in February 1870, described on the licence as Sally A. Crawford. So he died somewhere in those seven years, at about forty five, and no known record says how. The war took Fannin County men in both directions and no service record has been matched to him.
His son Samuel's death certificate, filed in Tennessee, names the parents as Geo. Crawford and Sallie Falls. That is the marriage of 1840 told from the other end by one of its children.
