Josephine Crawford
Josephine Crawford married John B. Tipton and bore at least nine children in the Georgia mountains. The 1910 census of Sugar Creek in Fannin County calls her Josie, aged forty seven, and gives her surname, like everyone else's in that house, as Lipton.
Her maiden name survives on one document, the Social Security file her daughter Minnie opened, which names her parents as John B. Tipton and Josephine Crawford.
The 1880 census of Morganton in Fannin County has JOSEPHINE CRAWFORD, 17, single, at home, DAUGHTER, in the household of BERRY CARTER, 33, farmer, born Tennessee, and SARAH A. CARTER, 56, wife, born North Carolina.
Berry Carter was her stepfather. He was sixteen years old when she was born, he was born in Tennessee, and her own line says her father was born in North Carolina. Her mother is Sarah A., North Carolina born exactly as the same line says her mother was, who married Berry Carter at Fannin County on 17 February 1870 as Sally A. Crawford, a widow twenty three years older than he was.
Her father was a Crawford born in North Carolina. The 1860 census of the 1027th District of Fannin County has George W. Crawford, forty, born North Carolina, with a wife Sarah of thirty seven, also North Carolina born, and six children. It is the only Crawford household in the county with a Sarah of that age and birthplace, and he is taken as her father on that ground. No document names him as her father.
John B. Tipton was seventeen in 1880, living as a nephew in Wiley Tipton's house at Morganton, enumeration district 59, sheet 672. Josephine is at Morganton, district 59, sheet 669. They married a few years later.
