Gregers Pedersen Smidt
Gregers Smidt, an officer of the Smaalenene country in Østfold, of a family that had supplied bailiffs and castle stewards for a century. He was a captain, attached to the Rakkestad company, and he did not own the ground he lived on: he rented the farm Haugsten in Rakkestad from the chancery councillor and district judge Hieronymus Bassøe.
In September 1777 he was at Hafslundmoen for the regimental exercise with the Rakkestad company, and his family's historian puts the meeting there: it was about that time that he met the young daughter of Johannes Berg, the works bailiff at Hafslund, and his wife Annichen Strømberg. She was Ingeborg Cathrine Berg, and he married her.
Six children were born to them, all at Rakkestad. Karen Johanne came in 1784, Friedrich in 1790 and Hans Strømberg in 1792, the last carrying his grandmother's surname as a given name.
He died in 1799. His widow then bought Store Holm in Idd, out on the Swedish border above Fredrikshald, and moved the household there, and it was at Store Holm that Friedrich was living when he married Charlotte Cathrine Linde in Fredrikshald church in January 1817 and was entered in the register as Hr. Proprietair.
