Gregory Baxter
Gregory Baxter came to Massachusetts in 1630 with the Winthrop Fleet, the ships that brought John Winthrop's company to found the Bay Colony. He settled at Roxbury. On 6 March 1631/2 he was made a freeman, which gave him a vote in the colony's affairs.
His English home is not known. The genealogist Charles Edward Banks guessed Sporle in Norfolk. Robert Charles Anderson, in The Great Migration Begins, leaves the origin blank.
His wife was Margaret Paddy, a sister of William Paddy of Plymouth and Boston. Their daughter Abigail was born at Roxbury in September 1634. About 1640 the family moved to Braintree, where Gregory served as a selectman, one of the men chosen to run the town's business.
His daughter Bethia married Samuel Dearing in 1647. Abigail married Joseph Adams of Braintree on 2 November 1650. His son John became Braintree's lieutenant, its representative to the General Court and moderator of its town meetings.
He made his will on 2 June 1659 and died at Braintree on 21 June. He named his wife and his son John as executors. The will was proved on 14 July 1659, and his inventory came to £417 19s 1d.
