Abigail Baxter
Abigail Baxter was born at Roxbury, Massachusetts, in September 1634. Her father, Gregory Baxter, had come over with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630. Her mother, Margaret Paddy, was a sister of William Paddy of Plymouth and Boston.
About 1640 the family moved to Braintree, where her father served as a selectman. Her sister Bethia married Samuel Dearing in 1647. Her brother John became Braintree's lieutenant and its representative.
She married Joseph Adams at Braintree when she was sixteen. The town book reads "Joseph Adames and Abigal Baxter were married the second day of the ninth month 1650", that is 2 November 1650. Joseph was a son of Henry Adams, who had come from Somerset in 1638.
Her son Joseph was born by 1659. Her father died that June, and his will left land and salt marsh to her and her husband, and a bequest to her little son. Her mother died in February 1661/2.
Two daughters named Mary followed. The first was born on 8 November 1663 and evidently died young. The second was born on 25 February 1668, entered as the daughter "of Joseph Addams & Abigail his wiffe".
She died at Braintree on 27 August 1692, "aged 58 years". Her husband died two years later.
