Halvor Heuch
Halvor Heuch, born at Skien in 1721 or 1722 and dead at Kragerø in 1785. He was a prokurator, a licensed attorney, and a trelasthandler, kjøpmann and skipsreder: timber merchant, merchant and shipowner. Three of his brothers settled at Kragerø as well, among them Rasmus Heuch, born 1725 and dead 1799.
The town history catches him on the way up. In one assessment he is Halvor Heuch, en opgaaende Stjerne i Byens kommunale, sociale og merkantile Liv, a rising star in the municipal, social and mercantile life of the town, who as yet sat with only en liden Negocie, a little business. He did not stay small. He appears in the ship-owning lists, in the tax lists among the men with the largest households, and on the committees: in 1765 he was the acting town clerk conducting a survey of Kragerø with the byfoged Peder Tønder at the direction of the Royal Economy and Commerce College, and in the 1770s he was one of the men who met at the town hall to apportion a voluntary tax as fairly as possible. The servant count of the period gives him two maids and a boy.
He married Marie Magdalene Solberg of Drangedal, born 1724 and dead in 1779 or 1774, a daughter of Halvor Halvorsen Solberg. They had nine or more children, of whom several died small. The two sons who grew up were Peter Andreas and Georg Christian, and of the daughters Hedevig Elisabeth, born 1753, married the byfoged of Kragerø, Jacob Giønge Tønder, in 1774.
