Hanna McAninch
Hanna McAninch was born in Illinois. The census of 1900 gives her birth as October 1857. It says she had been married 23 years and had borne nine children, of whom four were living. Her gravestone gives 17 October 1863. Her family gives her maiden name as Balch, her parents as William Balch and Mary Faris, and her marriage to Joseph McAninch as 21 July 1872 in Jasper County, Missouri.
Her daughter Laura was born in Kansas in January 1881. The family moved south to the coal fields of the Choctaw Nation, and in 1896 Laura married Emanuel Gragg at Krebs. In June 1900 Hanna and Joseph were living in Laura's household near McAlester, entered as the mother-in-law and father-in-law of the head.
A younger daughter, Annie, was born about 1901 and died in 1918. Hanna died at McCurtain, in Haskell County, Oklahoma, on 22 May 1924. She is buried in the Miners Cemetery there, the same ground where her grandson LeRoy Gragg was later buried.
Her stone is carved as the stump of a tree, with stubs of cut branches, and bears the seal of the Supreme Forest Woodmen Circle above a crossed axe and maul. The Woodmen Circle was the women's side of the Woodmen of the World, a fraternal society that sold life insurance to working families and gave its members these tree-trunk monuments. It reads: "Hannah, wife of Joe McAninch, Oct. 17, 1863, May 22, 1924. Gone but not forgotten."
