Hannah Jane Allen was born on 4 May 1865 in Monroe County, Ohio. On 12 July 1891 she married Henry Heinlein, a farmer and a widower with four young children living from his first marriage. Her maiden name and the marriage date are given on her husband's grave memorial.

Henry and Hannah had three children: Cecille Etna in 1894, Charles Loriston at Trail Run on 12 June 1897, and Lelah DeEtta in 1903. Their son Charles later wrote his parents' names as Henry and Hannah Heinlein.

One photograph of Hannah is known. It was taken in a studio about 1906. She sits in a wicker chair in a striped dress with a bow at the throat, her hair drawn up. Henry stands behind her with his hand on her shoulder, and the three children stand around them.

The family moved to Huntington, Indiana. Hannah died there on 9 August 1923, aged 58. Her daughter Lelah died the following year, aged about 21. Hannah is buried in Beech Grove Cemetery, Huntington County, where Henry was brought from Ohio in 1937 to lie beside her.
