Rev. Charles Loriston Heinlein
Charles Loriston Heinlein was born on 12 June 1897 at Trail Run in Monroe County, Ohio, in the hills above the Ohio River. His parents were Henry Heinlein, a farmer, and Hannah Jane Allen. He had an older sister, Cecille Etna, and a younger one, Lelah DeEtta. A studio photograph of the family survives from about 1906: Henry standing with his hand on Hannah's shoulder, Cecille in a white dress, Charles in a tweed suit and a bow, and little Lelah with ribbons in her hair.
The family moved west to Huntington County, Indiana, and belonged to the Church of God there. On 23 June 1917, at Huntington, Charles married Gladys Anna Miller, the daughter of Willard and Relda Miller of Clear Creek. Their daughter Velma was born at Clear Creek on 23 February 1919.
A portrait of Charles as a young man shows him in round wire glasses, a high white collar and a dark tie.
In the summer of 1932 Gladys fell ill. She died on 18 August 1932, at 34, at their home half a mile east of the Clear Creek school. Charles was left with Velma, who was thirteen. He married again, to Rose Russo, and had three sons: Carl, Charles Henry and Merle.
Charles became an ordained minister of the Church of God. He lived for a time at Marion, Indiana, and went on to Florida. There he was the first pastor of the Osprey First Church of God in 1950 and 1951, and the first pastor of the Sarasota First Church of God in 1951 and 1952. The Sarasota paper said in 1973 that he had moved to Florida from Marion fifteen years before, which would be about 1958, after those two pastorates. He retired to 6405 Oahu Drive in Hawaiian Village, Bradenton.
He died at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, 6 November 1973, aged 76. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune named his wife Rose, his daughter "Mrs. Velma Wohlford of Huntington, Ind.", his three sons, nineteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Friends were received at Toale Brothers' Colonial Chapel in Sarasota. The family asked for no flowers, and mourners could give Bibles to the Gideon Society in his memory at the visitation and the service. The Rev. Virgil Tucker took the funeral. His body was cremated, and he is commemorated with Rose on a bronze marker at Sarasota Memorial Park.
