Hannah Wood was born in 1784, the daughter of David Wood of Greenwich, Connecticut. On 20 October 1816, when she was about 32, she married Noah Hoyt, a farmer at Castleton, Vermont, four years her junior. His family had come up from Stamford, the next town to Greenwich, and his grandmother Ruth Hoyt had lived in Stanwich, the northern part of Greenwich, until 1807.

They had at least four children at Castleton: Delia in 1818, Sarah in 1820, and the twins Albert and Rollin on 29 July 1824. Her maiden name stayed in the family. Albert's eldest daughter, born in 1861, was Mary Wood Hoyt.

Noah Hoyt died at Castleton on 15 February 1868, aged 80. Hannah lived five more years and died at Castleton in 1873, aged about 89. They are buried in Hillside Cemetery at Castleton under one stone, which also carries their two daughters, neither of whom married: "NOAH HOIT 1788 - 1868 / HANNAH WOOD HIS WIFE 1784 - 1873 / DELIA ELLSWORTH HOIT 1818 - 1889 / SARAH MARIA HOIT 1820 - 1904".
