Albert Moore Hoyt
Albert Moore Hoyt was born on 29 July 1824 at Castleton, in Rutland County, Vermont, a twin with his brother Rollin. His gravestone gives 1825. His parents were Noah Hoyt, a Castleton farmer, and Hannah Wood, the daughter of David Wood of Greenwich, Connecticut. Moore was a family name; an uncle, Dr. Moore Hoyt, had taken his medical degree at Middlebury in 1821. The Hoyts had come up to Castleton from Stamford, Connecticut, in his grandfather's time, and the line runs back through four generations at Stamford to Simon Hoyt, one of the first settlers of Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1629.
Albert married Frances Delia Hall, called Fanny, on 26 May 1859, her twenty-fourth birthday. She was born at Vergennes, Vermont, the daughter of Dr. Atherton Hall. Apart from a few years at Whitehall, New York, just over the state line, he lived all his life in the town where he was born. Their first child, Mary Wood Hoyt, named for his mother's family and called May, was born at Whitehall on 3 January 1861. Ida Clarke Hoyt followed at Castleton on 28 April 1865, then George Hall Hoyt in 1868, Edward Albert Hoyt in 1871 and John Hall Hoyt in 1874. David W. Hoyt's genealogy of the family, published in 1871, lists him as "a farmer; living in Castleton, Vt."
He joined the Congregational church at Castleton during the pastorate of the Rev. W. L. Noyes. In his last years his health was very poor. By 1899 all five children were living in New York City, where George was in the leather trade. Albert died of heart failure at his home in Castleton on Sunday morning, 26 March 1899, aged seventy-four. The funeral was held the following Wednesday. He was buried in Hillside Cemetery at Castleton, in the family plot under the granite HOYT block, where his own footstone reads "ALBERT M. HOYT / JULY 29, 1825 / MARCH 26, 1899". Fanny outlived him by almost eighteen years.
