Harland Burnside Snook
Harland Burnside Snook was born on 15 April 1862 at Hagerstown in Washington County, Maryland, and carried the name of Ambrose Burnside, whose corps would march through Hagerstown's county that September on the way to Antietam Creek. The 1870 census found him, eight, in District 13 of Washington County. He went west to Kansas as a young man and married Rosa Anna O'Dell, an Ohio girl eight years younger; their children were born at Topeka between 1893 and 1907: John Robert, Clarence Monroe, Charles Everett, Wilbur Forest and Frieda Wilhelmina Charlotte.
He was fifty-seven and head of his own house in Topeka in 1920, and in 1930, at sixty-eight, he had his daughter Frieda, her husband Dewey Coleman and their two small children living with him and Rosa. Rosa died in September 1943. He died at Topeka in 1945, aged eighty-two or eighty-three, and was buried beside her in the Peace section of Memorial Park Cemetery under a red granite stone cut SNOOK, with "Harland B. 1862-1945" on the right and "Rosa A. 1870-1943" on the left.
