Harry Finley

Harry K. Finley was born in Kentucky on 1 March 1864, the son of George W. Finley and Achsah Ann Gambrall. In June 1870 he was six and living in the fourth ward of Louisville with his parents and his brothers Walter, fifteen, and Albert, twelve, and his sister Mary, eight. His mother died in October 1871, when he was seven.

On 22 July 1886, at Louisville, he married Emma Schroerlucke, whose name the clerk wrote Sherley. She was eighteen, a girl from a German household in the city. Their first son, George, was born that August. Clarabel followed in 1890, Kellum in 1893, Charles on 2 March 1894, Margaret in 1896 and Emma in 1899.

Harry was a plumber. In June 1900 he was renting a house in the eleventh ward of Louisville, and he told the census taker he had been out of work for seven months of the past year. Under his roof were Emma, the six children, and Herman and Mary Schroerlucke, from Germany, written as his father-in-law and mother-in-law. Herman, seventy four, was a tobacconist who had come to America in 1849. In 1910 Harry and Emma were still in the eleventh ward with George, Kellum, Charles and Margaret.

In 1916 his son Charles, marrying at Jeffersonville across the Ohio River, named him as Henry Finley, a plumber of Louisville. By January 1920 Harry was fifty four and boarding in a house of single working men in Jefferson County, still calling himself married.

In late May 1922 he was taken into the City Hospital at Louisville with pulmonary tuberculosis and failing heart valves. He died there on the morning of 8 June 1922, aged fifty eight, and the hospital itself supplied the particulars for his death certificate, which calls him a self-employed plumber. John W. Manning buried him in Eastern Cemetery on 10 June. His father and mother lie in the same cemetery under a double stone. Emma lived until 1940.
