Charles H. Finley
Charles H. Finley was born on 2 March 1894 at Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Harry K. Finley, a plumber, and Emma Schroerlucke, whose German surname the family also wrote Shirley. In June 1900 he was six, the fourth of six children, in a rented house in the eleventh ward of Louisville, where his mother's Prussian-born relatives Herman and Mary Schroerlucke lived with the family. He was still there at sixteen in 1910.
On 8 June 1916 Charles, twenty two and working as a brass polisher, crossed the Ohio River to Jeffersonville, Indiana, with Carmelia Beck of Louisville. She gave her birth as 19 April 1898 and her father as George Beck, a Louisville butcher; her mother, Bertha Butch, was dead. Charles named his parents as Henry Finley, plumber, and Emma Shrellakes. Alonzo F. Paddacks, a justice of the peace, married them the same day. By about 1921 the couple had moved north to Sandusky, Ohio, a lake port and railroad town on Lake Erie, where all of their children were born.
In the census of 1940 Charles was forty six and head of a household of eleven in Ward 3 of Sandusky, in the blocks south of the New York Central tracks between Columbus Avenue and Hayes Avenue. The family had lived there at least five years. With Charles and Cornelia were Ruth, 19, Charles E., 18, Georgetta, 16, Robert, 14, James, 12, Frieda, 10, Jack, 7, Milina Irene, 3, and the baby Marilyn, 1.
In 1941 he lived at 215 West Perkins Street and worked as a smoker at a meat packing company, the man who cures the meat over smoke. On 29 October he was taken ill. He died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Sandusky at half past four the next morning, at forty seven. The doctor gave the cause as acute dilatation of the heart, with fluid on the lungs, and a diseased heart valve behind it. He left Cornelia with children as young as two. He was buried two days later in Section H, Lot 112, of Oakland Cemetery in Sandusky, under a small stone carved FATHER. Cornelia lived another fifty four years and was buried in the grave beside his. In 1952 his son Jack named him as Charles H. Finley on his own marriage record.
