Henri Derrez
A Walloon from Vottem, a village on the northern edge of Liege, who married there and then brought his family north over the language line into Dutch Limburg. The parish registers of Schinnen call him ex Vottem for the next twenty years, and the priest who christened his son Bartholomaeus Rochus in 1776 closed the entry with a line that settles where the marriage happened: Parentes juncti sunt matrimonio in Vottem prope Leodium, the parents were joined in matrimony at Vottem near Liege.
The eldest of his children found, Martinus, was baptised at Vottem on 2 November 1757, and the Schinnen priest later copied that entry into his own book as an extract from the Vottem register, which is the clearest sign of a family arriving with its paperwork. From 1760 the children are christened at Schinnen itself, ten of them in all, the household moving between the hamlets of Nagelbeek, Schutteneind, Broek and finally Moutheuvel. He could not write: at his son's wedding on 1 June 1779 the marriage entry records hoc est signum Henrici Derrez patris sponsi, this is the mark of Henri Derrez, father of the bridegroom, and he made a cross where his name should have been.
His wife died of consumption at Moutheuvel on 13 November 1789 and was buried three days later. He married again the following May, to Anna Catharina Bohres of Julich, and his son Joannes Mathias stood witness. He died at Moutheuvel about seven in the morning on 10 November 1798, fortified with the sacraments, and was buried in the Schinnen churchyard on the twelfth. The burial entry calls him widower of Maria Latinne of Vottem, naming the wife who had been dead nine years rather than the one he married after her, which the entry does not explain.
His own parents are not named by any record read, and would be in the parish books of Vottem.
